RH is awarded ‘Beacon’ status
The coveted status of ‘Beacon Company’ has been awarded to Exeter-based RH Advertising, in recognition of the firm’s ongoing growth and success.
RH is one of the first advertising agencies to make it onto the Beacon list, a South West of England Regional Development Agency (RDA) initiative to put the region’s most ambitious and forward thinking businesses at the forefront of the South West’s economic growth.
Tough criteria mean only businesses able to demonstrate significant growth and best practice over the last three years achieve Beacon status.
“We’ve been expanding steadily over the past three years,” says Richard Marsh, managing director of RH Advertising, “and our plan is to grow by another 30 per cent this coming year. This rate of expansion is rewarding but hard work, so it’s great for everyone in the company to get the kind of recognition that Beacon status bestows.
“When you look at the amazing calibre of other advertising agencies in the region, being one of the first to have achieved Beacon status brings our accomplishments into even sharper focus. I think this must be down to our strong client relationships, which enable us to understand and fulfill requirements 100 per cent and more.”
RH Advertising is the largest full service independent agency in the South West. Clients include national brands such as Mr Sheen, Fujitsu Siemens and The National Trust and regional clients including South West RDA, Devon County Council, VisitCornwall, Paignton Zoo and Traveline. The agency has developed a fully integrated suite of creative and marketing services, including brand development, marketing strategies, media buying, advertising and direct marketing.
According to Beacon South West, RH Advertising was awarded Beacon status because of its successful business strategy and exploitation of market opportunities. Its innovation in the development of an integrated ‘real time’ agency management system was also a key factor, as was its development of a multi-skilled creative team.
“RH Advertising is a great addition to the 200-strong cluster of Beacon companies,” says Sue Baker, project director for Beacon South West. “We believe the agency has an important role to play in helping us cultivate enterprise excellence in the region.”
RH Advertising will now be listed on the Beacon South West website - www.beaconsw.org – as an exemplar company alongside other top regional business brands such as Aardman Animations, St Austell Brewery, Graphic plc, ROK, Triodos Bank and The Seafood Restaurant. It will have the opportunity to share experience with other Beacon companies, access ideas and market intelligence and contribute to the regional business agenda.

NETGEAR appoints RH Advertising for first consumer brief
NETGEAR, which designs, develops and markets award-winning computer networking products for home users and small businesses, has appointed RH Advertising to develop its first ever consumer facing campaign. The six-figure account was awarded to RH after a three-way pitch.
The new campaign will target consumers in the run-up to Christmas and will look to capitalise on the rapid growth in the use of broadband in the home and the growing demand for wireless networking products.
The initial advertising breaks in the colour supplements of the weekend national newspapers and in other consumer titles such as Sainsbury’s magazine. It will be followed by point of sale material in retail outlets across the country such as PC World, Dixons and Maplin.
The campaign aims to conquer consumers’ fear of technology by focusing on the user-friendliness of NETGEAR products and the ease in which they can be set up. It will also seek to highlight their style, value, performance, security, and reliability.
“Our initial aim is to boost sales of networking and wireless solutions in the run up to Christmas,” says Micheal Evans, NETGEAR’s marketing manager for the UK and Ireland. “This will target the four distinct demographic clusters in the consumer market that we have identified.
“Our attention will then turn towards raising awareness among consumers and distributors, with the overall goal of making NETGEAR synonymous with the home networking and wireless sector.”
Steve Manser, Account Director at RH Advertising added: “The explosive growth in the use of broadband wireless and home networking offers an excellent opportunity for NETGEAR, which has a strong reputation for developing high quality products, to build its brand and expand its consumer market.”
He added: “NETGEAR is an important account for RH. Alongside our recent work for some of the world’s leading IT brands, it is a step forward in our strategy to increase our presence in the sector.”
Micheal Evans added: “RH demonstrated the best understanding of both our offering and our objectives. Their creative presentation and strategy for the campaign were spot on.”

Rik Mayall with nurses on the set of Plastic Surgery TV Commercial |
Rik Mayall stars in TV ad to promote reusable bags
The 30-second ad reunites Mayall with director Peter Richardson, following their partnership on cult comedy series 'The Comic Strip Presents' in the 80s. In the ad Mayall plays a plastic surgeon who shows a hapless shopper carrying her groceries in plastic carrier bags the error of her ways.
After her bags split, Mayall turns up outside the supermarket in a green van and performs a surgical transplant on her shopping, which involves moving her groceries from plastic bags to reuseable cotton bags.
"Plastic bags are a real problem. We dump over 200m of them in landfill in Devon every year and they take about 500 years to biodegrade." Said Liz Poulter, senior waste manager at Devon County Council.
Earlier this year Don't Let Devon go to Waste & RH scooped the Best TV ad at the 2007 Chip Shop awards, for their 'Fistful of Rubbish' ad.
The campaign also features bus sides and posters, as well as a supermarket campaign encouraging shoppers to cut down on their excess packaging. In October a Plastic Surgeon Road Show will be touring Devon supermarkets to promote reusable cotton bags.

RH spaghetti western scoops ‘Best TV ad’ at Edinburgh Chip Shop Awards
RH Advertising and its client Devon County Council have beaten off tough competition to scoop an industry award for the ‘Don't let Devon go to waste campaign', promoting recycling in the county.
The ad won Best TV Commercial at the Chip Shop Awards, which recognise the advertising industry’s most creative campaigns. Established over 20 years ago, the awards attract entries from leading advertising agencies across the country. They are now a regular fixture at the Edinburgh Fringe, where the ceremony for the winners took place on August 23.
Directed by acclaimed actor and director Peter Richardson, famous for his series of ‘The Comic Strip Presents’ comedies, the 40-second ‘Fistful of Rubbish’ spot follows a spaghetti western genre. The dual ends in a scene which sees the two guys stripping naked and pushing their clothes into the clothing-recycling bank. As they strip off, an old lady passing by on her bicycle sees them and promptly steers into the ditch.
Richard Marsh, Managing Director of RH, said: “We’re delighted at the result, especially as we were up against some of the biggest names in the business. Creativity is alive and well in South West England.”
Councillor Margaret Rogers, Executive Member for the Environment at Devon County Council added: “A really creative ad campaign can make a huge difference to recycling efforts. If it’s witty and memorable, it’s more likely to drive home the message and persuade people to make a change in their behaviour.
“The campaign, and the rest of our communications work, has made a massive difference to recycling figures and attitudes towards recycling in Devon.”
Since autumn 2002, when the campaign began, the recycling rate has gone up from 19.5 per cent to over 46 per cent. The work has helped make Devon the third highest recycler in England.
The award-winning ‘Fistful of Rubbish’ TV ad, supported by posters, bus sides, and PR, will run again at Christmas.
